  1. I do not know of a province or district team with this designation and apparently no one else does either. I was the team chief for MAT 113 which was under Advisory Team 84 (Lien Phong Province). We were stationed in Cao Lanh. There were three of us on the team … myself; my assistant, 1LT Mark Mazzolini; and SFC Varner. Were we advisors to what had been the 28th Lien Doi and was redesignated as the 423 RF Battalion. The commander was Dai Uy Dong.

I arrived in September of 1971 after having been assigned as the Team Chief of MAT 58 in Phong Dinh Province (Advisory Team 56) and after spending an unhappy month as the night duty officer at the TOC in Can Tho. In October the battalion went to a training center for refresher training (Because of the redesignation, even though nothing had changed but the unit designation). Soon after completing the training, the battalion went on an operation in boats, the majority of the province being flooded. The point platoon was ambushed and suffered heavy casualties. In November my team received a change of mission and we moved to My An district and went out on a daily basis to a firebase of the 21st ARVN Division where we taught procedures for ground controllers of air assets during the time that such assets were transitioning from USAF to VNAF.

I returned to the states just before Christmas.
